Coup fatal
A rousing performance for eyes
and ears
Serge Kakudji, Rodriguez Vangama,
Fabrizio Cassol, Alain Platel
Enchanted curtains glowing in the background of the
stage. Taking a closer look they turn out to be a network of cartridge cases, a
sign of violence and random destruction taken from the Congolese war.
The extremely talented team of artists consisting
of the Congolese countertenor Serge Kakudji, the Belgian composer Fabrizio
Cassol, the conductor Rodriguez Vangama and the well-known choreographer Alain
Platel, confronts visually stunning language with the arias of Georg Friedrich
Händel and Christoph Willibald Gluck.
For the collaboration, which premiered at
the 'Wiener Festwochen' in 2014, they took inspiration from the Congolese
movement Sapeurs, the Congolese dandies who would have a cultivated elegance
and a life-affirming attitude. COUP FATAL opposes itself from the
day-to-day pain and the Congolese wartime atrocities, by its contradictory
beauty, catching vitality and lust for life.
Overall the 13 musicians celebrate the joy of life
on stage, which touches the audience through their magnificent expression,
the mélange of opera; jazz; traditional and contemporary Congolese music and
their vibrant way of moving. It is a definite must-go, you will find yourself
in a cultural experience which blows your mind!
The next tour through Europe starts on the 22 of march 2016.
