Marie Chouinard Company: GYMNOPEDIES

On Wednesday the 27th november 2013, at the Shouwburg theater in Arnhem, took place the performance “HENRY MICHAUX: MOVEMENTS and GYMNOPEDIES” by Marie Chouinard Company. Choreographer and artistic director, Marie Chouinard brings to the stage a piece on the notes of the famous composer Erik Satie and also Richard Wagner and the Overture of Tristan and Iseult.. The lightning design is from Alain Lortie and the costumes are from Liz Vandal. Marie Chouinard also made the set design, the addittional costumes and props.

The subject of this creation is based on sensuous, childlike, innocent, playful, rough, and passionate sex and eroticism, there are in fact explicit sexual references and you can notice it when the dancers simulate a sex scene on a fabric. Using Erik Satie’s piece the choreography is based on intimate and sensual duets performed with extreme precision and clarity of movement and the eleven dancers take turns playing on a piano onstage. At the beginning the dancers were covered with a fabric draped as if they were sculptures, they are slowly dropping the fabric and the piece comes to life. Accompanied by the sweet music the audience feel part of the scene. Marie Chouinard recreates, through the choreography, a series of stituations where even the viewer feel involved. For example when a couple naive naked emerges from the blue fabric and then disappears in a cave at the back of the stage or when a strong and mighty man driving a lithe woman eh point in an erotic dance.

The performance ends with a scene which is very nice and I would say even unexpected. When people are just about to leave the theater the performance continues. The curtains rises and the dancers continue their performance. But they don't really dance a lot, they animate the audience more and even go into the audience! They are funny and involving the audience in the performance. In my opinion the choreographer was able to describe in a clear and simple way that the concept was sensuality and sex, subjects that people still find hard to discus nowadays. A difficult subject to deal with, but executed through art, in a very deep and intense mood.
